Dear Members.
From comments made after the last lecture, those who attended definitely enjoyed hearing Mary Branson talking about her magnificent work of art at Westminster Hall. So interesting to have an insight of the procedure and the people involved.
The next lectures, by Christopher Bradley, is on Art of Uzbekistan- Heart of the Silk Road. I am particularly interested as my father was born in nearby Baluchistan.
The lecturer will be talking about traditional artisans who continue to work metal, ceramics, wood and fabric in the fertile Ferghana Valley. Located along the Silk Road, Uzbekistan has produced amazing art under diverse rulers such as Alexander the Great, Ancient Persians and the Soviets.

Day Visit on Wednesday 14th October 2026
Tickets will be on sale at the June lecture for the October Day Visit to the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford to see :  Aphrodite: The Making of a Goddess.

The lecture in April is by James Vaux on re-imagining the Nation: 19th Century Danish Landscape
In the 19th Century, Denmark lost territory and regional power but produced its finest art. This talk looks at how landscape painting was powerfully used to re-imagine a new, smaller Denmark, to create a different sense of nation and to unite its diverse regions.

Day visit to Uppark House and Gardens on Wednesday, 10th June. Lots of you have shown interest.  Price will be £51.50 or £41.50 if you are a member of The National Trust or Art Fund. If you are paying by cheque, please add an extra 40p for bank charges. Price includes tea/coffee and biscuits on arrival and a sandwich lunch.

Janet will be at the next lecture and would like to meet up with those going to Vienna in April after the lecture.

Sky Art
You may remember that we had an excellent lecture in October on the Guggenheim Museum by Sian Walters. She is, at present, doing a series on Sky Arts/Now TV called 'Beyond the Brush. She will be examining a different painting each week. Sky Art is available on Freeview, so you do not require a Sky subscription. It's on Friday.
I gather Sian also gives lectures on cruises such as Hebridean cruises.

Area Study Days
You will be aware that our society has supported local drama groups and art in the community with financial grants from The Arts Society Area Team. These grants are made possible with the profits generated from the Jean Bolton Study Days in Winchester (and on Zoom ) - the next autumn series will be on 'Colour in Art ' - please keep an eye out for further details in our newsletter. 
  We got an opportunity to meet Arts Society speakers and hear about their new lectures at the annual Directory Day, which was held in central London last month.  Planning for our 2027-28 programme begins in a few months so we may secure another range of interesting and wide ranging lecture topics for our members.

This year we will donate the £300 given to our society from Area H&IOW for a local Am Dram group to Brockenhurst Players. Michael Jones, the group's treasurer, will come and say a few words at our May lecture.

An Evening with a Local Author at Waterstones in Lymington on Thursday, 2nd April at 7 pm. Rachael McLean will be in conversation with one of the booksellers to talk about her latest book in the Dorset Crime Series, 'The Beach Hut Murders'. General Admission is £5 or a book and a ticket is £12. Book your space in store.

Just to let you know that Sian Walters' new series, Beyond the Brush, premieres this evening (March 18th 2026) on Sky Arts/NOW TV. There are two episodes at 8pm and 8:30pm for the next three weeks. 'Alongside my co-presenter James Payne, I’ll be examining a different painting each week, including Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper, Goya’s Saturn Devouring His Son and Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights. This week's episode will explore Munch’s Scream and van Gogh’s Starry Night.'

Sky Arts is available on Freeview, so viewers do not require a Sky subscription. The series is also accessible via Roku and Amazon in the United States and will soon be available on Youtube Movies, Tube, Plex, and Samsung platforms. Arte will broadcast the programme in France and Germany in the near future.

Dear Members

It does feel as if Spring is finally coming, even with all the rain we've had. Lots of daffodils out and it's lovely to see them along the roadside.

The February lecture on Shackleton's endurance experience was outstanding. Mark Cottle certainly made his presentation remarkable with his booming voice. The committee were treated to more of his anecdotes as he joined us for lunch.

Next lecture on 9th March is by Paula Nuttall on Isabella D'Este: First Lady of the Renaissance. It sounds as if it'll be a very informative lecture.

Day visit-Wednesday 10th June to Uppark House and Garden, which is a National Trust property. Rose is waiting for the cost for entrance fee and lunch, but is taking names. Please do let her know if you are interested. June should be a lovely time to visit such a venue.

Residential Visit
The final arrangements for Vienna are being made for those on the trip.
The Trip to Kent in September is filling up. I gather that we can accommodate a few more. See Diana Stewart at the lecture for further information if you are interested.

Other Issues
Regarding the car parking registration, can I enforce that it's best to register your car when you come into the hall? We had a rare incident in which one of our members who attended the Special Interest Day received a parking fine. It was sorted out within days, but obviously alarming to receive a notification in the post. If you do get a fine, go to the Brockenhurst Hub website and complete the form go to there. Also, let the hall know and one of the committee members. 

Other events
In the news a few days ago it mention Rose Wylie who is exhibiting her paintings at the Royal Academy of Arts at the age of 91. There is hope for us then! Her work is bold and bright.
She is the first British woman painter to exhibit at the Royal Academy and was describes as 'an art word rebel in her prime' 

St. Barbe's Museum are continuing to show Kurt Jackson's artwork on the Lymington River. I keep popping in and discover something new each time I go. Magnificent colours and hues of familiar local sights.

Newsletter-Febuary 2026

Dear Members

Thank you very much for the feedback received for both the January lecture and the report and exhibition on the recent youth project.
I felt that we had not given you enough feed back on previous youth projects so have asked Ruth Conway and Donna Moore to give a short resume of past projects.

Donnas report-
The Arts Society sponsered two groups of children from Lymington Junior School for a six week art course at Spud works in Sway. They were immersed in a wonderfully creative environment with professional artists, all of whom were very welcoming and encouraging. There were two projects: The Forest  and the Japanese Art of Sumi-e, both of which were very successful.
They  learned new skills using very good equipment and looked at and discussed  artists' work in these  and other areas. This was  a great bonus . Horizons were widened and the world of art embraced and confidence and technical skill were acquired. The benefit will be of use in all areas of learning
Vanessa Collingridge is a gifted artist and teacher which for us is a wonderful combination . The chidren were fully engaged from start to finish and the wolrd of art became part of their world. (They also said that it had been  great fun!)

Ruth Conways report-
I decided to work with primary aged children as this was where my teaching experience had been before I retired.  Over the ten years I planned to offer the pupils of several local primary schools,a variety of artistic experiences which they may not otherwise have had. My overall aim was to encourage children  to widen their skills and knowledge and to enjoy art, both whilst looking at the art of others and whilst creating art themselves. I would encourage the schools to choose pupils who perhaps needed a boost to their self esteem or who would benefit from focussed art work. The generous grants from the Arts Society enabled me to engage artists with specific skills to work with the children. Some of the creative areas we studied were life drawing, pottery, weaving, figures in clay,  photography, and model making. I also felt that it was important that pupils felt empowered to express their own opinion about works of art and therefore we visited a sculpture park, our local art Galleries and the National Gallery. Many sessions were held in our local galleries – Sway and Lymington, and were fortunate enough to have the children’s work displayed in both. Several years ago, knowing that we had many talented members of our society I invited several of them to work with pupils from local primary schools to create a banner in patchwork to celebrate the 50 years of our society. Seeing this banner displayed at our meetings reminds me of the great times I had as Young Arts co-ordinator. 

Our yearly Special Interest Day was held on Monday 26th January. Those who attended were treated to brilliant lectures and a delicious light lunch on a miserably cold day!
The topic was 'Seaside Modern' by the entertaining James Russell. Look out for the next one next year.

Grant of £300 to a local amateur drama group
Area Office gave each society £300 to allocate to a local amateur drama group. We wrote to several asking for them to apply and what they propose to do with the money. We decided to award it to Sway Drama Group who would use it towards renewing their antique lighting system, Pictured below, me with one of Sway's resident in Sway Village Hall. A similar amount has been offered by Area for this year. If you know of any local Am Drams, please let me know.


Next lecture- Monday 9th February by Mark Cottle. The subject Is A Photographic Odyssey: Shackleton's endurance expedition captured on camera. Obviously it will be a very popular lecture and we already have quite a few visitors booked in. To give our members the first choice, we restrict visitor numbers to ten for any lecture.

This lecture looks at Giles’s life and work, with a particular emphasis on his cartoons, particularly those featuring Grandma and the Giles family. They include some of his funniest cartoons.

Art in miniature can be found throughout history and cultures from the earliest of times. This series will explore the varied techniques, styles, forms and qualities of “miniature” or very small forms of imagery. What lovely time of the year with leaves changing to beautiful hues of autumn colour. I love the seasonal changes.

Something to look forward to is  The Special Interest Day on Monday 26th January.
 The day consists of three lectures with tea/coffee on arrival, a small break in between the morning lectures and then lunch after the second lecture. All for £45.
The topic will be

Seaside Modern by James Russell

Take a trip to the seaside with the curator of the much-loved exhibition Seaside Modern(Hastings Contemporary 2021) in a lecture exploring the art and social history of the British beach.

During the first half of the 20th century something amazing happened to the beaches of Britain: they became glamourous. Men and women swapped fusty Victorian garments for daring swimsuits as 19th century prudery gave way to 20th century exhibitionism. The beach became a major source of inspiration for artists, not only those like the Newlyn painters whose focus was the human form, but also more experimental painters and sculptors. While Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth responded to the sculptural qualities of objects found on the beach, Paul Nash and Eileen Agar revelled in the strangeness of the seashore. Seaside Modern is an exuberant, wide-ranging lecture that casts a fresh eye over a period of remarkable artistic and social change. Featuring paintings, sculpture and works on paper by the most famous artists of the period, as well as posters and archive photography, Seaside Modern makes an important contribution to our understanding of the period’s cultural and social history. The lecture is based on the exhibition of the same name I curated at Hastings Contemporary in 2021, and I touch on the sometimes fraught and occasionally hilarious business of curating exhibitions like this. Sounds inspirimemng. The next monthly lecture is on Monday 10th November and will be on Mozart and his Operas. Jamie Hayes, the lecturer has, himself, directed many new operas in the UK and abroad. Great topic and something to look forward to.

Those who went up-to London to see the Lee Miller exhibition were amazed at her variety of work. Some pieces had not been on display before.
The next visit will be on Thursday 4th June 2026. This will be to Uppark House and Garden. Please ask Rose for more details.
